OpenOffice, like many office suites, includes an option to automatically save files. In the event of a system or application crash, these autosaved files can be recovered so that you lose little to no data. While Open Office typically prompts you to open any automatically saved documents when you next launch the program, you may sometimes need to manually recover an autosaved file. The location of these files depends on your operating system and installation options.

How to Recover Auto Saved Files from OpenOffice

Step 1

Press "Alt-F4" on a Windows PC or "Cmd-Q" on Mac OS X to shut down OpenOffice if it is open. Wait until the application has closed completely before continuing.

Step 2

Click "Tools | Options | OpenOffice.org | Paths" to find your user profile folder. Navigate to it in Explorer or your file manager and locate the OpenOffice backup folder.

Step 3

Look for any files ending with the extension BAK. Copy these files to another location on your system, such as the desktop.

Step 4

Rename any backup files with a new extension to match the extension used by that Open Office file type. For example, if Filename.bak is your word processing document, rename it Filename.odt. If you saved your document as a type other than ODT, such as TXT or DOC, use the appropriate file extension instead.

Step 5

Double-click the file to open it. The Open Office application associated with that file will launch and display your recovered document.
